Why did we create the new cosmetic line “Black Skin Cosmetics”?
For too long, the cosmetic industry has overlooked dark-skinned African American women, who represent 55 to 60% of the African American female population in the United States. “Black Skin Cosmetics” are designed specifically for these women—those whose stunning deep complexions have been neglected. Our mission is to offer makeup that celebrates and enhances the beauty of this rich, diverse skin tone that deserves recognition and representation.
Here are some key product categories we are starting with, along with shades and formulations:
**Foundation**: Offer a diverse range of foundations that cater to various undertones (cool, neutral, warm) and a wide spectrum of shades. Consider liquid, cream, and stick formulas. Brands like Fenty Beauty have set a great example with their extensive shade ranges.
**Concealer**: Create highly pigmented concealers that provide good coverage for dark circles and blemishes. An array of shades that can highlight and contour would also be beneficial.
**Setting Powder**: Develop translucent setting powders that don’t leave a white cast, especially in deeper tones. Consider offering tinted powders that complement darker skin tones.
**Blush**: Choose richly pigmented blushes in both matte and shimmer finishes. Warm shades like deep berries, corals, and bright pinks work beautifully on deeper skin tones.
**Highlighter**: Formulate highlighters in gold and bronze tones that flatter dark skin. Cream and liquid formulations can offer a natural glow.
**Eyeshadow Palette**: Curate palettes that include vibrant and rich shades that pop against dark skin. Consider including both matte and shimmer finishes to create versatile looks.
**Eyebrow Products**: Offer eyebrow pencils and pomades in various shades of brown and black, ensuring they have good pigmentation and staying power.
**Lip Products**: Create a range of lipsticks, lip glosses, and lip liners in bold colors that suit darker complexions—think deep reds, browns, and vibrant pinks.
**Skincare Line**: Since skincare is essential, consider developing moisturizers, serums, and cleansers tailored for melanin-rich skin. Incorporate nourishing ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and hyaluronic acid.
**Makeup Tools**: Don’t forget about brushes and sponges that cater to the application of your products. High-quality tools can enhance the overall makeup experience.
**Inclusive Marketing**: Ensure that your branding and marketing are inclusive and represent the diversity within the Black community. Use models of various shades and undertones to showcase how your products look on real people.
**Consumer Feedback**: Engage with your target audience early in the process through surveys or focus groups to gather insights on their preferences and needs.
By focusing on these core products, we can establish a strong foundation for your brand. It’s also important to keep up with trends and listen to consumer feedback to continuously improve your offerings.
